Parents and Title I Parent involvement contributes to student success in school. By taking an active role in your school, you show your child that you value their education. Your child will understand that you and the school are a team working together to help him or her succeed. Parents and guardians are encouraged to attend school functions, participate in workshops offered by the school, and communicate with their child’s teachers. 504 https://smithtecadmin.wixsite.com/website/es/504 504 Dr. Jane Riley x3441 School Psychologist and 504 Coordinator (413)587-1414 ext. 3413 Section 504 of the Americans with Disabilities Act is anti-discrimination legislation that mandates any public institution (schools included) to provide accommodations to eligible individuals with disabilities (who have a major life function significantly impacted) that allow the individual to access the general education program; this includes extra-curricular activities. School counselors are the 504 liaisons for their respective grade levels here at SVAHS. Upon referral for a 504 evaluation (with consent from the parent or legal guardian) a Team of individuals who knows the student convene to determine if the student is eligible under Section 504 and then decide if that student requires an accommodation plan to access the general program. Once eligible the Team then develops a plan that outlines reasonable accommodations that will allow the student to access the general program. Once consent is received by parents initially the plan is distributed to all teachers, coaches, etc. for implementation. The plan is then reviewed annually and eligibility is reviewed tri-annually. If you have any questions regarding section 504 or would like to make a referral for a 504 evaluation, please contact your child’s school counselor or Student Services at (413)587-1414 ext. 3402. - English Language Education | SVAHS
ELL English Language Education https://www.smithtec.org/english-language-learning English Language Education English Language Education Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School’s English Language Education Program is a Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) program designed to support English language learners (ELL) in acquiring English language proficiency as well as making academic and vocational progress towards attainment of a diploma and competency certificate while enrolled in our school. This approach makes use of instructional materials, learning tasks, and classroom techniques in academic and vocational content areas as the vehicle for developing language, knowledge of content, and study skills. Core academic teachers have DESE’s SEI endorsement or are in progress of attaining the endorsement. Both pull out and push in services (with bi-lingual support, if necessary) are utilized and individually determined based on student proficiency level and academic needs. English language learners and students (who have a language other than English spoken in their home) are identified upon registration so that second language instruction and translation services can be provided. The SVAHS Program of Studies, Student Handbook, Parent's Rights, and other important documents are available to parents and students in the language of the home. Translators are provided at parent meetings and special events. By Massachusetts law and regulation, English language learners are assessed using the ACCESS for ELs assessment. Students score between Levels 1 and 5 and these scores are used to inform student placement in the following year. Students who have been enrolled in a school in the United States for a year or more are also required to participate in the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS). If you have questions regarding the SVAHS's English Language Education Program or state testing requirements as they pertain to ELL students, please contact: Katherine Dunne, ELE Teacher (413) 587-1414 ext. 3571 (kdunne@smithtec.org ) or Michael Parks, Curriculum Director (413) 587-1414 ext. 3478 (mparks@smithtec.org )

These certifications require ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certified instructors train students in the necessary basic skills needed in order to meet an entry-level automotive technician's job requirements. The program provides students with the opportunity to develop skills in the use of technical manuals, tools, and equipment commonly employed in automotive service work. The major emphasis of this work is for students to gain a broad understanding of the scientific principles of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems found in the modern automobile. The Automotive Technology Department is a fully operational twelve bay automotive service and repair facility equipped with a state-of-the-art computerized diagnostic center, computerized technical library, six lifts and a large power train laboratory for training in six areas of NATEF and AYES automotive technology competencies. The goal of the program is to prepare students to take and pass ASE and AYES certification tests in the following areas: Engine Repair, Engine Performance, Manual Drive Train & Axles, Brakes, Heating, Suspension & Steering, Electrical/Electronic Systems, and Engine Performance. While national certification is not currently mandated, it can provide greater opportunities for employment, higher rates of pay and greater mobility since the certification standards are recognized nationally.

Smith Vocational is proud to award all qualifying graduates with the Massachusetts State Seal of Biliteracy . “The State Seal of Biliteracy is an award provided by state approved districts that recognizes high school graduates who attain high functional and academic levels of proficiency in English and a world language in recognition of having studied and attained proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation. Our vision is to help students recognize the value of their academic success and see the tangible benefits of being bilingual.
